Our architectural methodology follows a clear and disciplined sequence, ensuring that each project is guided by a coherent design vision from the outset. Every stage is structured to maintain transparency, foster creativity, and uphold architectural integrity.
Initial Consultation & Brief
Each project begins with a collaborative conversation. We listen closely to our clients’ aspirations for the project while undertaking an initial analysis of site conditions, context, and constraints. This establishes a unique and individual brief - and forms the foundation for a design response that is both purposeful and deeply connected to place and developed over the following stages:
Stage 1: Sketch Design (SKD)
The Sketch Design stage is where the architectural direction emerges. Through hand-drawn studies, preliminary layouts, and early massing explorations, we test the relationship between built form, landscape, materiality, and spatial flow.
These studies are presented to the client (sometimes as multiple options) to define the best solution for the brief and the site; and then further resolved as required to create a clear return brief and design intent to inform further stages. This process ensures that the architectural response is grounded, robust, and an aligned vision for the project is resolved.
This stage of works also support clients in establishing project parameters and understanding site capacity in multi-unit designs. This includes feasibility assessments, planning checks, site appraisal, environmental considerations, and assessment of regulatory frameworks. These investigations provide clarity around constraints and opportunities, enabling a confidence in purchasing a site, or moving into further stages.
Stage 2: Concept Design (CON)
Taking on the direction from the previous phase, the Concept stage refines the early sketches and masses into a computer model. Architecture and interior layouts are developed in unison, ensuring an integrated vision from day one. Concept drawings and models articulate the architectural logic and communicate the design intent with clarity
At the end of the stage these Concept documents are then updated to include specific information relating to Council planning controls to enable co-ordination with the Town Planner to assess compliance with the District Plan and submission by them for Resource Consent (if required).
Stage 3: Developed Design (DD) of Architecture and Interiors
Once the concept is confirmed, we refine the selected scheme into a more resolved architectural proposal. Key systems, materials, and structural considerations are developed at a medium grain of resolution through components, plans, elevations and sections – and key details are identified. We work closely with the project team of engineers and specialist consultants to coordinate structural, services, and environmental inputs, integrating their expertise into cohesive overall systems.
The DD phase of works happens concurrently between the Architecture and Interiors, with both disciplines feeding into, and informing the outcome of the other and draft schedules of Finishes, Fixtures, Lighting and Electrical and Fittings are prepared for discussion with the clients.
Stage 4: Construction Documentation (CD) of Architecture and Interiors
With the key elements of the design resolved, we refine the full Construction Documentation package for the Architecture and Interiors, encompassing the technical and regulatory framework required to progress the project toward construction. This takes the work from DD and resolves it to a fine grain of detail and documentation alongside the project team.
At the end of this stage, the relevant documentation is submitted for consent, and our rigorous approach creates a clear and consistent documentation set for pricing and construction.
Stage 5: Construction & Completion
The level of involvement you require from Yoke. during construction can be tailored to suit the project type and complexity. We work with quality builders to successfully manage the construction process, and remain hands-on and design-focused as required.
We have a strong rapport with artisans throughout Central Otago and we promptly respond to site queries when they arise. This balances the practical constraints of the built outcome, whilst advocating for the integrity of the architectural vision and quality of construction to achieve a finish product that is a joy to inhabit.
