Contemporary

Our approach to Contemporary architecture is defined by linking modern architectural theory to a timeless design approach. Guided by the modernist maxim of form follows function, our work is defined and resolved through carefully articulated forms, material honesty; and a considered relationship to light, movement, and landscape.

As contemporary architects we design luxury homes and buildings shaped not only by programme and function, but also by the character of the site, the rhythm of daily life, and the evolving ways in which people inhabit space. In New Zealand, where landforms are complex and views expansive, this demands a design language that is both quiet and confident, yet flexible between alpine and coastal sites, rural and urban. We balance open-plan interiors that expand toward the horizon alongside sheltered courtyards and private spaces that offer refuge and retreat. As a result, our design approach is not constrained to a single contemporary style or language, but responsive to the site, context and brief.

Our past work spans diverse interpretations of contemporary architecture homes, always grounded in a commitment to spatial clarity and crafted restraint. Ivy Box presents a sculptural response to a tight lakeside site - bold, expressive, and deeply anchored to place. Argyle distils modern house architecture into a refined urban composition, where spatial fluidity and rich materiality create a sense of calm enclosure. At the Tiers, we explore the potential of contemporary building design within a multi-residential context- balancing density, privacy and openness through thoughtful form-making and orientation.

Yoke’s approach to residential architecture is design-led and collaborative. Our team works closely with clients across Queenstown, Wānaka, wider Central Otago and beyond, shaping contemporary architecture house plans that are nuanced and enduring. From initial concept through to delivery, every decision is informed by a sensitivity to terrain, climate, and the human experience of space - balanced against an overarching contemporary design aesthetic, form and language.

Whether crafting modern architectural design for a single dwelling or developing plans for complex multi-residential briefs, Yoke. delivers architecture that feels intimately connected to its context.
